A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” declared the head of state.
The president reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose term concluded the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in national works. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had also raised persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This pause was proposed pending a full independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been running in total accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital initiatives.
