Congress Passes Bill to Disclose Epstein Records

The Senate on Tuesday gave swift approval to a measure that will force the release of investigative files associated with the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following a near-unanimous vote in the US House of Representatives and a shift by Donald Trump and his GOP allies. Trump's team changed course after an extended period of trying to delay the cross-party initiative involving a case that has dogged the president since his comeback to the White House.

Expedited Approval in Congress

The Senate acted by unanimous consent, which requires approval from each senator but avoids a individual voting process, expediting the process. Just before, the House voted decisively for the bill on a massive majority.

Citizens have waited long enough. Jeffrey Epstein’s victims have waited patiently,” Chuck Schumer stated in a floor speech on Tuesday, before asking the chamber to pass it unanimously. “Let the truth come out. Allow openness to prevail.”

Next Steps

The measure next will be sent to the president for his endorsement. He signaled on the previous day that he would approve the bill.

Although the president has for an extended period downplayed the outcry over the authorities' approach of the Epstein case as a “false narrative”, he expressed his backing for the House bill over the weekend, and announced he would give his assent if it is presented to him.

Support and Opposition

Democrats, along with those affected and their supporters who were present in a public section, cheered after the bill was approved. Lone dissent came from a GOP representative, who said he worried the measure would reveal personal information of individuals involved, those under scrutiny and others caught up in the investigation.
